Skin Cancer Victims Returning to the Sun Tan Booths!

Unbelievable! As a skin cancer victim myself, I have become hyper vigilant about staying away from the cancer causing UV rays. I dress my young son in sun protective clothing and keep sun screen on our family whenever we go outside. So I was SHOCKED when I read that 1 in 7 skin cancer victims actually return to the tanning booth!!! Tanning beds can emit as much as 15 times the amount of UVA rays as the sun and indoor tanning is known to lead directly to skin cancer. From the Yahoo article:

“One in seven people goes back to a tanning bed after being diagnosed with skin cancer, according to a new research letter.

Indoor tanning is known to increase a person’s risk for cancer.

“The situation may be analogous to that of lung cancer patients who continue to smoke after diagnosis,” said lead author Brenda Cartmel, a cancer prevention researcher at the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Connecticut.”

Interestingly, the article goes on to say that, for some people, tanning may actually be addictive to some degree. Skin cells exposed to UVA light make feel-good endorphins, and that feel-good feeling might be addictive.

Take it from a Mom who had skin cancer before age 30 – STAY OUT OF THE TANNING BEDS (especially if you have already had skin cancer – you know better!!!!). 🙂
