Great news regarding sunscreen labeling! The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) new label rules for sunscreen went into effect this year, which will provide more guidance for people trying to avoid sunburns. Here at SwimZip UPF 50+ Sun Protective Clothing, we take sun protection and sun protective clothing extremely seriously. If you want to know what are the new sunscreen labeling rules, here is a story about the new 2013 sunscreen labeling guidelines from the Dallas Morning News:
“The most important change is a new reference to “broad spectrum protection,” which means the product you’re buying protects against all harmful ultraviolet rays.
All sunscreen products should offer protection against UVB rays, which are the primary cause of sunburn. But both UVB and UVA rays contribute to sun-induced skin cancer and premature skin aging.
You won’t find any references to “waterproof” or “sweatproof” sunscreen because those words were eliminated from the sunscreen vocubulary. And if a product’s front label makes claims of being water resistant, it must designate whether it’s protective for 40 or for 80 minutes while swimming or sweating.
Products may no longer be identified as “sunblocks” or claim instant protection or protection for more than two hours without reapplying.
Broad spectrum protection means the product you’re buying will protect against all harmful rays in the suns spectrum. If those words are missing, you will not get such protection.”
Remember, the Skin Cancer Foundation states that the best form of sun protection is sun protective clothing like SwimZip UPF 50+ Swimwear, which blocks 99% of UVA and UVB rays!
